Stonecroft has the oldest Syrah vines in New Zealand. These vines were rescued by the founder of Stoncroft, Dr. Alan Limmer, from the Te Kauwhata Research station and planted at Stonecroft in 1984. We still have the original row of vines. With The Original Syrah we have used just a single barrel of wine to make a super premium wine, which has been made from fruit picked from the oldest parcel of vines. This wine has only been made three times; in 2009, 2014 and 2018.

95 points. Fantastic bouquet, floral, fruity, flesh and spice, oak and power. Aromas and flavours of black cherry and raspberry, there’s a floral touch with roses then layers of oak and new wood sweetness. Delicious, new, fruity, varietal and with a mix of button mushroom, fresh meat, a mix of spices and lots of wood - this package works remarkably well. best drinking from 2024 through 2030+.

95 points. Dense, deep-tinted syrah with plum, raspberry, violet/floral, cigarbox, black pepper, and spicy oak flavours. Surprisingly accessible thanks to a core of sweet fruit and ripe, restrained tannins. An elegant red.

Certified organic, the notably refined 2020 vintage (5*) was hand-harvested from a row of vines planted in 1984 and matured for over 18 months in a single new French oak barrel. Bright ruby, it is floral, mouthfilling and supple, with concentrated red berry and spice flavours, a vague hint of liquorice, gentle tannins and a lasting, savoury finish. Very finely textured and harmonious, it's still a baby and should flourish for a decade – maybe longer.
