Undressed Syrah 2019


Stonecroft has the oldest Syrah vines in New Zealand. These vines were rescued by the founder of Stoncroft, Dr. Alan Limmer, from the Te Kauwhata Research station and planted at Stonecroft in 1984. For the Undressed Syrah this year, we set aside a few barrels of Chave clone from the Fernhill Vineyard and did not add any sulphur at bottling. No added sulphites and suitable for vegans.

Colour: Deep ruby red colour.
Aromatics: Dense black fruit together with hints of pepper and sweet spice.

Palate: The wine has black fruit flavours, mocha and notes of spice. It has a smooth finish, and soft tannins. Suitable for vegans and preservative free.

Technical Info

Region: Gimblett Gravels Wine Growing District®, Hawke’s Bay.
Vineyard:  Fernhill.
Variety: Syrah.
Harvest: Hand harvested.
Vinification: Fermented in open-top stainless steel fermenters. Hand plunged two times daily. Post fermentation soak for two to three weeks followed by maturation in barrel.
Maturation: Matured in seasoned French oak barrels for 4 months without adding any sulphur (nor was sulphur added at bottling).
Bottled: 9th October 2019.
Analysis: Alc  12% vol.
Closure: BVS.
Production:  160 cases.

Cellaring Potential: 4-6 years.

“Beautifully balanced,” noted Yvonne, “with a strong baked raspberry, anise and white pepper character.” Our judges were all impressed with how perfumed this organically grown wine with no added sulphites (hence the ‘undressed’) was. When you add that to juicy, lush and sweet-fruited flavour, emery-like tannins and an elegant, youthful finish, that gives this wine great personality and drinkability.

Certified organic, the ‘preservative-free’ (no added sulphur) 2019 vintage (4*) is a single-vineyard red, matured for five months in seasoned French oak barrels. Deeply coloured, with a floral, fresh bouquet, it is medium-bodied and vibrantly fruity, with generous, plummy, spicy flavours and supple tannins. An attractive, drink-young style.
