Ruhanui Merlot/Cab Sauv 2016

$26.96

This is our blended red wine. Originally, this wine was the first to be made with fruit from the Mere Road and Roy’s Hill vineyards. Before 1876, the Ngaruroro River took a bend around Roy’s Hill through what is now our Roy’s Hill Vineyard. In 1876 the Ngaruroro flooded and broke through an old channel called the Ruhanui, forming the present river. Our Mere Road vineyard is on the river terrace of the present Ngaruroro, so the name Ruhanui was seen as link between the two vineyards. From the mid 1990’s fruit for the Ruhanui has been sourced from the Roy’s Hill Vineyard. The vines were planted in 1992.

93 points/ 5 stars. This is a stylish Bordeaux blend showing attractive blackcurrant, spiced cherry, smoked game, mushroom and toasted almond characters on the nose. The palate is beautifully weighted and rounded, delivering lovely fruit weight and intensity, together with fine texture and chalky tannins. Well composed, this is complex and engaging. At its best: now to 2022. Certified organic. Dec 2018.

Still very youthful, the 2016 vintage (4*) is a blend of Merlot (55 per cent) and Cabernet Sauvignon (45 per cent), estate-grown at Roy's Hill and matured for 20 months in seasoned French oak barrels. Full-coloured, it is mouthfilling, with fresh, ripe, plum and blackcurrant flavours, showing very good depth and considerable complexity, and a smooth, tightly structured finish. Best drinking 2020+.
