In 2013 we purchased a vineyard at the end of Mere Road, our Fernhill Vineyard. This vineyard is made up of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon and is now certified organic. It was previously owned by Mills Reef and was known as their Trust Vineyard. 2016 was our third vintage from the vineyard. The vines were planted in 2000 and 2001.

Dark, deep, black-hued purple-red colour, near impenetrable at the heart, a little lighter edged. The nose is tightly packed with intense and penetrating aromas of blackcurrants with cassis liqueur, along with nuances of mint and dark herbs and blackcurrant leaf. This has clarity, purity finesse and concentration. Medium-full bodied, the palate has fulsome and well-packed, deep and dense flavours of ripe blackcurrants and cassis along with subtle notes of sweet herbs. The fruit forms a robust core with plenty of tannin extraction and grip, with grainy structure. The acidity is balanced, lending tension and the wine flows with good vitality to a solid, full finish. This is a fulsome, deep and densely flavoured Cabernet Sauvignon with ripe blackcurrant and cassis flavours on a robust palate with plenty of grip and energy. This will develop over the nest 12-15 years. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 20 months in 35% new French oak. 19.0/20 Nov 2018
Well worth cellaring, the classy 2016 vintage (5*) is an unblended Cabernet Sauvignon, estate-grown in Mere Road. Hand-harvested from mature vines (planted in 2000 and 2001), it was matured for over 18 months in French oak barrels (35 per cent new). Dark and still purple-flushed, it is ripely fragrant, rich and supple, with fresh, concentrated blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours, finely integrated oak, gentle tannins and obvious potential; open 2021+. Certified organic.
95 points. Medium deep crimson. Impressive yet refined ripe plum blackberry aromas with nougat, roasted nut notes and mocha oak. Inky blackberry, cassis fruits, fine grained slightly bitter textures, chinotto notes, underlying savoury cedar oak. Finishes firm and long. Very classic in structure with some aniseed peppery lift. Diam Cork 13.5%
94 points. Organic, from the Fernhill Vineyard. 18 months in French oak. This is grippy, tannic and quite gravelly, with a grainy, chalky texture to the blackcurrant fruit. It’s Cabernet at the margins, with lovely focus and structure to the bright fruit. Has all the ingredients to age really well, with firm tannins still clamping down on the fruit. But you could drink it now with robust red meat.
First certified organic vintage from their Fernhill Vineyard. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. 20 months in French oak, 35% new. Dark garnet. Classic cassis nose with extra vivacity. Very direct, bright fruit within a mellow frame of zesty tannins. You could drink this now but you'd be well advised to wait if you can. Really quite luscious and alluring. Great life to this. Hint of pepperiness. Drink 2019-2028. 17 points.
94 points. Dense, tight cabernet sauvignon with classic blackberry, cedar and subtle mint flavours, together with a hint of gamey complexity. A firmly-structured wine that needs time in the bottle to show its best
96 points. Dark purple and ruby core through to the rim where it turns pink. Very youthful and fruity bouquet with aromas of blackberry and marmite, Doris plum jam and an abundance of wood smells – cloves, vanilla and other baking spices. Firm, dry, bold and concentrated on the palate with loads of dark berry flavours, plums and dark cherry. No mistaking the impact of oak, tannins and acidity. A wine that needs a lot more cellar time to integrate and meld. Lovely lengthy and promising finish, complex and delicious. Best from 2024 through 2034.
Spices, forest floor, milk chocolate, toasty oak, funk, savoury with time. A core of intense fruit, blueberry highlights with an umami note, a bright, tight chewiness at first but develops a lovely velvety quality. This really grows on me and draws me in, before flowing to a long close framed by the tannins.
Appealing now with food, but time will be a friend.
94 points. Deep red colour with a good purple tint. The bouquet is herbal, crushed-leafy and grassy, with high-toned cool-climate cabernet aromatics. A hint of meaty reduction. The wine is lean-ish, elegantly-crafted, focused and fine, with tension and nerve. The aromas and flavours are very cool-climate cab and the tannins are firm, tight and insistent - but balanced. This needs more time. The finish is very punchy, and lingers on well. (100% cabernet sauvignon)
